Description

With zero time to spare, infrastructure investors and operators play a critical role in achieving global temperature goals by ensuring a Just Transition to a low carbon economy via the transition of critical infrastructure assets within their portfolio. Through collaborations with governments and operating firms, infrastructure investors can fill the investment gap to drive the energy transition supporting a healthy environment and flourishing social systems.

David Neal, Chief Executive of IFM Investors, a global institutional asset manager with US$ 139 billion under management, will be joined by:

  • John W.H. Denton AO, the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)

  • Stephanie Pfeifer OBE, Chief Executive, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC)

  • Luba Nikulina, Chief Strategy Officer, IFM Investors

The panel will explore the following:

Long term capital: overcoming barriers and scaling up investment

Institutional investors are well-placed to help finance sustainable energy and transition projects because they have a long-term horizon and sophisticated capabilities.  But barriers, such as the need for larger project size and lack of policy incentives, are holding back this outcome. How can this be addressed?

Partnerships: working together to close the investment gaps, deliver a Just Transition and contribute to better systems

In a global endeavour and recognising there is zero time to spare, governments, the private sector and civil society need to work together to increase the flow of long-term capital to fund the energy transition. What does best practice look like?

Innovation and technology: asset level transition and sectorial decarbonization

New and traditional infrastructure’s focus on innovation and development of new technology paving the road to sustainability.

Using long-term capital to fast track the Just Transition

Putting people at the centre of climate transition planning

To ensure a successful energy transition on the global scale, people need to be at the centre of transition planning. Combining climate action with social inclusion will be essential to inform, educate and get buy in from the public to support net zero policy measures. That is why the Just Transition is one of the top four focus areas of COP28.

IFM Investors, a global institutional asset manager with US$139 billion assets under management, convened an expert panel to support the COP28 Just Transition focus. Tune in to hear from internationally renowned experts on promising approaches; learn how the UK and Australia’s largest pension funds, with over US$330 billion in assets, are tackling the challenge; explore what more can investors do on their own and in collaboration with public and third sectors; and more

Maria Nazarova-Doyle, Global Head of Sustainable Investment at IFM Investors will chair the discussion and will be joined by:

  • Nick Robins, Professor in Practice for Sustainable Finance, Grantham Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science

  • Deborah Gilshan, Head of ESG and Stewardship, Europe at AustralianSuper & Founder of The 100% Club

  • Diandra Soobiah, Head of Responsible Investment, NEST

The panel will cover:

The many lenses of the Just Transition
